A commercial centre in New South Wales needed to reduce rooftop plant noise reaching nearby residences, without shutting the centre down to do it.

Safetylyne engineered and manufactured and installed acoustic screens around the plant zone facing the residential boundary, added a new plant deck, and built compliant maintenance access into the same scope.

KEY CHALLENGES

Noise needed to stay contained to the residential boundary side of the site, without screening the full roof. The plant deck, screens, and access systems had to go up fast on a live, trading site. The screens also had to tie into the existing facade structure rather than sit as a standalone system, which meant matching connection points and finish to the building rather than installing a generic barrier

There was a requirement to provide an acoustic screen to reduce noise from roof-mounted plant equipment impacting neighbouring properties, especially at night time. The shopping center management was concerned about the residual HVAC noise level and their impact. The screen layout was positioned to the most effective locations to absorb and deflect sound waves to a reduced and acceptable level without screening the complete area and adding unnecessary cost and visual bulk. The installation methodology was streamlined to provide a complete installation as quickly as possible and minimise interruption to the site logistics. Safetylyne planned the crane lift and panel sequence in advance so the crew could move straight from deck to screens where possible to streamline the installation process with minimal downtime between stages. Our team installed a complete package incorporating the roof safety system, integrating anchor points, walkways, condenser decks, HVAC screens and ladders.

Safetylyne built a plant deck to carry the rooftop equipment, then installed six acoustic screens around the zone facing the residential boundary. Maintenance access incorporated the same scope, so the finished system gives the centre noise control and safe long-term access provision without a second project bolted on later.

Why Partial Screening

Screening the entire roof would have added cost, weight and visual bulk.

The noise issue was directional, coming from one plant zone toward the residential boundary, so the screening solution matched that footprint exactly. This is the kind of scoping decision separates an engineered acoustic solution from a standard product install.

HVAC Maintenance Access Built for Ongoing Compliance

Rooftop plant needs regular servicing long after the installation day. Compliant maintenance access was part of the original brief, not a retrofit added once the screens went up, so the centre now has a documented, standards-aligned maintenance access to reach the plant deck and roof plant equipment.
